I hope that whatever happens is right for the story and the characters, and I will certainly share whatever news I can moving forward. So while Lionsgate has certainly listened to my feedback, at the end of the day, they do what they think is best. As I’ve said in the past – and as Ally Carter notes in her excellent blog post on the subject – it’s uncommon for an author to have any creative control over the adaptations of his or her work. A lot of this, has to do with the hatred that fans expressed about Allegiant. I, like you, am waiting to see what happens. This was not the story Veronica Roth wrote, yet it’s being changed for the films. And now the situation is a little uncertain as Lionsgate pursues another avenue for the final installment of the series.
I was not a part of the decision to split the last book into two parts, though I was curious to see how the movie team would accomplish it. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I direct you here and here.) The potential spin-off series would feature a new cast that continues the story of Roth's post-apocalyptic world as society rebuilds after Tris Prior (Woodley) and her friends destroyed the faction system that divided everyone into groups based on their personality traits.Īccording to Variety, Lionsgate is still in the process of securing the deal to make the change and has not pitched to any networks, yet.Veronica Roth has finally answered all of her fans’ “what’s up with the Ascendant movie” questions in an open letter posted to the official Divergent Facebook page today.Ī lot of you have been asking me what’s happening with the Ascendant movie. Ascendant was supposed to begin production in Atlanta this summer, but has been pushed back while Lionsgate arranges the new game plan. It is still unclear whether the films' stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller and Ansel Elgort will return for a television movie though, putting into question how the film would work. Variety's source says that the studio is now looking to release the final film as a TV movie that could potentially launch a spin-off series.
However, Lionsgate is reevaluating the release strategy after after the third movie, The Divergent Series: Allegiant bombed at the box office earlier this year. The Divergent Series: Ascendant, the fourth and final installment of the film series based on Veronica Roth's dystopian young adult novels, was scheduled to hit theaters in the spring of 2017. The final film in the Divergent series will be seen on a much smaller screens, according to a Variety report.
